Here’s my school satchel and some music books, from the exhibition of The House of Annie Lennox, when it was presented at Aberdeen Art Gallery last year. These things accompanied me through my secondary school years. They’re redolent with memory and symbology. The satchel holds a sense of dread, authority and confinement for me. That particular shade of brown leather..It’s rigidity..It’s small lock and clasp. There’s something disquietingly official and conformist about it that still affects me now. I like being 58 years old and not being obliged to attend an institution of any kind, even though I would still love to study.. Guess I’d be more of an Open University type!
