Nelson Mandela retired from public office several years ago but in spite of the fact that he was very elderly and infrequently seen, he was still undoubtedly the absolute reference point for South Africa. He was the glue that held the whole thing together, even while he lay in hospital in the final months of his life. His presence resonated everywhere. There is a massive sense of “void” in his passing that can never be filled. Very hard to describe, but so incredibly poignant..
