I watched the feature film "The Fifth Estate" about Wikileaks and Julian Assange yesterday and I thought it was very thought provoking indeed. It leaves you with a lot of questions…in fact, I think that the whole thing could be summed up with a massive question mark about the powers that be – what we believe to be true – and what we actually have no clue about. It leaves you spinning and feeling spun. I think that Benedict Cumberbatch’s performance is excellent, although I’ve only ever seen Julian Assange on You Tube interviews , so I really can’t say whether it’s a fair portrayal of the man. No one can, unless they actually know him personally. The way technology has raced ahead, there’s no question that at some point the issue of boundaries around classified information/ privacy and security would inevitably be challenged at some point or another. So the question arises… Who are the bad guys? The whistleblowers, or the corrupt systems they aim to expose? I know it’s a great deal more complex, but I did say it leaves you asking questions. Thoughts???
