Interesting how the word ‘Feminism’ means different things to different people. Even very powerful women like Angela Merkel are still somehow resistant to embracing the term fully. In a way this is both a weakness and a strength for the women’s movement. I think people deduce what feminism means to take whatever they feel resonates appropriately for themselves. Personally I have a clearly defined perspective as to what Feminism means and have no problem with owning it with confidence and pride. What is it that Angela Merkel balks away from?
I think it’s incredibly important to have dialogue about this. At least then female leaders and parliamentarians would know where they all stand in terms of empowerment for women and girls, and begin to represent and serve the issue better.
When 1 in 3 women will be beaten, coerced into sex or otherwise abused in her lifetime. When 13 girls under the age of 18 get married every 30 seconds… What’s not to be a Feminist about?
