Design by Nature! On the topic of design moving on from cars..As shells go, this one is pretty outstanding..A gorgeous conch, or to put it more formally.. A marvellous example of a marine gastropod mollusc! This one stays with me on a shelf for decoration..but conch shells have a variety of functions…. including being turned into musical instruments, or blowing shells..They can be used to make jewellery, and some conch’s produce pearls, and have been collectors items since Victorian times. In classic Mayan art, conches are depicted being used as paint and ink holders for elite scribes, as bugles and trumpets, and as hand weapons. ( not so friendly!) Buddhism incorporates the conch shell as one of the Eight Auspicious Symbols, and it’s also used as an important ritual object in Hinduism. The people of ancient Peru worshipped the sea, and often depicted conch shells in their art.And in William Golding’s book, Lord of the Flies, the conch is used as a trumpet to call everyone together, and held by whoever is speaking at meetings, symbolically representing democracy and order… Just a few small details about the humble conch to make you wonder!
